Red Bow Schedule for Presidents Week

Red Bow Studio will be open next week with special scheduling. Regular classes will not be held, but there are a series of children's workshops that will be held. Sorry that this is so last minute, but hopefully some will be interested!!
The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday 10AM-Noon- Paint a Canvas (open to all kids K-5)
Tuesday 1-3PM- Modge Podge a Lamp (open to adults and children)

Wednesday 10AM-Noon- Modge Podge a Lamp (open to K-5)
Wednesday 1-3PM- Paint a Canvas (open to adults and children)

Thursday 10AM-Noon- Create a Shrine (open to K-5)
Thursday 1-3PM- Create a Paper Flower Bouquet (adult and children)

The morning workshops are drop off and the cost is $50 per child. This price includes all the materials. Each child should bring a snack and drink. Class limited to six children.

The afternoon workshops are for parents and children. It costs $75 for one parent and one child. An additional child is $25. These prices include all materials. 10 participants max for the afternoon workshops.

Paint a Canvas Workshop-
In this workshop we will paint hardboard canvases with acrylic paints. In the morning workshops each child will have a choice of one canvas (either 8"x10" or 10"x10"). The subject matter is of the child's choosing- please bring in pictures and inspiration if you would like! We will learn how to plan out a painting and techniques for painting. In the afternoon workshops each/parent child will receive one canvas. An additional child will receive and additional canvas. The idea is that the parents will collaborate with their child/children to create wonderful paintings!!

Modge Podge a Lamp
In this workshop we will use decorative paper and our own drawings to cover a lamp. In the morning workshops each child will receive and ikea glass lamp. We will learn how to decorate a lamp with modge podge and paper. In the afternoon workshops each/parent child will receive one lamp. An additional child will receive and additional lamp. The parents and children will work together to make lovely lamps to decorate their house!!

Create a Shrine
In this morning workshop the children will use paint and decorative paper to collage a cigar box. Each child will choose a theme for their box and use this "theme" to create a shrine.

Create a Paper Flower Bouquet
We will use paper and gems and many other lovely things to create a springtime bouquet for the home. (These flowers can also be used to create and indoor wreath). Parents and children will work together to create a springtime masterpiece!

"Create A Gift" Holiday Fair at Sea Cliff School

Pure Potentiality 2012 Calendar

Every year I create a calendar and here is the one for 2012. If you would like to order one, please contact me personally via email or phone the studio-theredbowstudio at gmail dot com or click the icon on the side of the blog and it will take you to Paypal. There are two choices- a letter sized calendar on heavy gloss paper that when open measures 11"x17" at the price of $20 and a large size on linen paper that is 13.5"x19 at the price of $35. I will be sending the calendars out late next week (around December 10th), so if you order now, expect them mid month. If the calendar is a gift, please tell me and I will wrap it and include a note for the recipient.

All of the above paintings are 9.5"x11.5" gouache on paper and they are for sale for $175 each. If you would like to invest in one of these original artworks, please contact me. January (Girl on Bike), September (Beach Scene), November (Bridge Lessons), and December (Black Lab) have already been sold.

Adult Hula Hoop Workshops with hooper Alison Lerman

The long awaited workshop is here! Hooper Alison Lerman has graciously decided to host a hoop-making workshop on Sunday December 4th from 1-3pm. The hoops will already be constructed (but she will give a quick description of how to do it at home), and then the taping will begin. She will guide everyone how to wrap there hoops with special tape and describe why each is important. Please bring yourselves and your questions to the workshop for an afternoon of fun. The cost is $45 which includes all materials. A week later Alison will be hosting a hoop jam in town that everyone is invited to participate in- and you could do it with your brand new hoop! Modge Podge a Lamp November 9th 7-9pm

Modge Podge a lamp November 9th with Patricia Weiss. This lamp makes a great night light for a child, or is a nice way to decorate any room. We will draw with inks, stamp with stamps, and work with fancy papers to decorate our lamps. Matte medium will be used to place our images onto the lamp and then spray it with a varnish to finish it off. This is an adult workshop, so feel free to bring wine and snacks.
Cost is $55, includes all materials.

Have you wanted to paint an acrylic painting, but don't know where to begin? Well join Patricia Weiss at Red Bow to learn how to take a photo or idea and realize it on a canvas. She will help you with layout, color and any other questions you may have. All levels welcome, just the yearning to paint needed. We will be painting on a 11"x14" or a 12"x12" canvas. Patricia Weiss will be teaching two four week class sessions in November. The classes will be a survey of different media- one week we will use collage, another week we will paint, another we will draw, and the last will be a grand finale of all. Cost $120 per student- prices include all materials. Size limited to 6 students per class.
Patricia will be hosting open studio time for older children who are more focused on their own work. The materials are provided, but the ideas are supplied by the artists. Patricia will be there to guide and help the students to hone their artwork and style.

Stamp Carving Workshop October 23rd, 3-5pm

Patricia Weiss will be teaching a stamp carving workshop on Sunday, October 23rd from 3-5pm. The cost is $45 which includes all materials. She will show you how to carve your own designs into Speedball Speedy Carve plastic and then we will print out our designs on tags and flat cards. You will be able to take home your stamps and use them to your hearts delight! They are great for using to decorate artwork, stationary, cards, tags, and many other things. Rock Painting Workshop October 20th

On Thursday, October 20th from 7-9pm, Patricia Weiss will lead a workshop on Rock Painting. In this workshop she will show you what paints she likes to use to paint the rocks and what designs work well for her. The painted rocks are great for giving as gifts (children love them) and work well for garden or flower pot decorations. The cost of this workshop is $40 and it includes all supplies.

Basic Beading and Beyond
THIS WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD NOVEMBER 3RD from 7-9pm.
October 13, 7-9pm cost $55 includes most materials (silver discs are extra)
Whether you are beginner or have taken a class before, there is something for everyone. Kathleen provides the colorful beads and will go over the basics of beading on memory wire and elastic. New for this class, she'll demonstrate using brass beads and knotted leather or knotted silk. Plus, we will incorporate the brass beads with brass wire to make hip earrings. To accent your creations, she will show you how to create pendants with wire and how to texture a metal disc with hammers or letter stamps. A materials and resources list will be provided.

Adult Summer Workshops

Below are the adult workshop offerings for the summer. I still have to add some details, but for the most part, all of the information can be found below. I may add a workshop or two depending on how the summer goes. If I left out information, please email me!! If you would like to sign up, please email or call the studio. (The information is in the sidebar). Each workshop is limited to 6 participants due to studio size. Each workshop is from 7-9pm at night and they are for adults over age 21 so that you are allowed to bring beverages of your choice.

Decoupage a cigar box- Monday, July 11th- $35

In this workshop we will collage over a cigar box with magazine cut outs, drawings, tissue paper, and many other things to turn it into our own special creation. These boxes are great as a gift or to use at home to store your treasures.

Rock Painting- Wednesday, July 20^th- $35

A fun and easy workshop, we will take everyday rocks and paint designs on them with acrylic paints. Afterwards they will be sprayed with an acrylic fixative so they will last for years to come.

Paint a Canvas- Monday, August 1^st and 8^th- $95

In this two part workshop series, you will use acrylic paints to paint a 8”x12” canvas. Ideally you will bring a picture from home or a drawing you have already created, and you will paint it onto a canvas with acrylic paints. Patricia Weiss will help you with layout, color choice and form of your painting.

Create a Shrine- Wednesday, August 17^th- $55

In this workshop you will paint, glue, and cut to create your very own shrine out of a cigar box (or any other special box you’d like to bring in). The theme is yours for the choosing, and you can bring in trinkets and what not to embellish the box. We will have goodies at the studio for you to use as well.

Cork Board Workshop- Thursday September 8^th- $55

Start collecting corks, because it takes a lot to create a cork board! In this workshop we will use a glue gun and frame to create our very own cork boards.

Jewelry Workshops for Adult and Children

Summer Morning Camp at Red Bow Studio

COST: $150 Per week includes all materials.

Three mornings a week from 9:30AM to 12 Noon.
We will focus on a single area of art and create artwork portraying what we have learned. These classes are for children ages 6-10 who are serious about their artwork and would like to spend their mornings creating in an intimate studio setting with friends. We will be learning techniques and skills in each area that they will be able to use beyond the class. We will also have a lot of fun. Due to studio size, there is a maximum of six students per week. Sign ups are per week and you may sign your child up for as many or few weeks as you like.

Week 1 Printing June 28,29,&30

In the first week of mini-camp we will learn about printing with foam, plastic stamps and stencils. On the first day we will work with brayers and stamps to create simple prints. The other days the campers will create their own designs and then print them.

Week 2 Paint A Canvas July 5,6,&7

The second week of camp will be spent with acrylics painting a canvas. On the first day we will sketch out our ideas and draw them onto our canvas. The second and third days will be spent working with the acrylic paints, focusing on color and form.

Week 3 July Bookmaking 12,13,&14

In the third week we will work with simple types of bookmaking, creating different small books and learning about how they can be used in everyday life. Our creations will include a stab stitch sketchbook and an accordion book.

Week 4 Still Life Painting July 19,20,& 21

Our forth week will focus on still life painting. We will learn all about the face and body and use it to create drawings and paintings. By the end of these three days, your camper will be confidant in drawing the human body.

Week 5 Create a Shrine July 26,27,&28

In week five we will create a shrine out of a cigarbox. Each child will choose a theme for their “shrine” and then paint and embellish the box based on their ideas.

Week 6 Portrait Painting August 2,3,&4

Our sixth week will focus on still life painting. We will learn all about the face and body and use it to create drawings and paintings. By the end of these three days, your camper will feel confidant drawing the human body.

Week 7 Collage Modge-Podge Aug 9,10,&11

In week seven, we will spend our time cutting with scissors and pasting modge podge. We will decorate a home item that can be used for the years ahead (It might be a lamp or a tray- I haven’t decided yet. Ideas welcome!)

Jewelry Workshop Success!

The April jewelry workshop was a smashing success, with a lot of fabulous jewelry as the result. We have decided to add two more jewelry workshops to the calendar. Jewelry Workshop with Kathleen DiResta

In this workshop with Kathleen DiResta, you will make your own beaded necklace with a pendant. You'll learn how to texture a brass or copper disc and be able to personalize it with an initial or your own design. (Sterling silver discs are available for an additional $10.) You will then string faceted crystal beads onto memory wire, elastic, or fishing line (your choice) with your pendant to make a fabulous necklace! Materials and resource list will be provided.

While finishing her BFA in sculpture and art history at SUNY New Paltz, Kathleen took her first job as a jeweler in the summer of 1991, and has been creating unique designs ever since. Her line of playful, geometric jewelry has been featured in books and magazines, selling nationally at galleries and high end craft shows. CREATE YOUR OWN INNER CHILD DOLL with artist Beth Costello

In this workshop Leslie Salka will teach you how to use simple mosaic techniques to beautify a flowerpot for your home or garden that you can gaze at all summer long. In week one your child will learn different beading materials and techniques by creating a necklace and bracelet with colorful beads. In week two the student will work with copper and brass wire to make shapes with pliers and texture with a hammer. In the final session your child will learn how to use stamping tools to create letters and texture into copper and they will make an initial pendant that hangs on a satin cord. In this workshop you will make your own beaded necklace with a charm! Jewelry designer will guide the students to create a beaded necklace on silver plated memory wire. You'll learn how to texture a brass or copper disc and be able to personalize it with an initial or your own design. Sterling silver discs are available for an additional price. The Best Watercolor Palette Ever

Every Thursday at 10am, Red Bow Studio hosts an art journaling workshop; a morning of creation mixed with relaxation. We work in sketchbooks, cutting, pasting, painting, drawing; each week is a different surprise. Pictured above is Karen, a veterinarian who studied art in college, but hasn't painted frequently since then. Because of the workshops, Karen decided she wanted to invest in a nice set of watercolor paints, but where does she begin?

There are many types of watercolors, from student grade to artist's grade, from tube to pan, from English brand to Japanese brand, how is one to decide?? In my painting escapades, I have found that I love my hand picked palette of Winsor & Newton full pan watercolors, something that is very difficult to find in the USA, and if you can find it, it's going to run you a good chunk of change. I recommended to Karen that if she was serious in her watercolor pursuits, then she should invest in a palette that she can have for a lifetime, with watercolors that will deliver in color and beauty every time. I told her that she should get what I have, a metal palette with full size Winsor & Newton pans.

Once this decision has been made, then comes the hard part...this type of palette doesn't come with a preselected assortment. You have to hand pick them and this can be difficult if you haven't been painting and know which colors you like to use. I recommend reading a Siriol Sherlock book, because she has a very nice starter palette. Once you begin to paint, you will figure out which colors you will need to add to the palette.

Now here's the golden secret: the place to buy your watercolor set is Ken Bromley. They are a British shop, but it's worth ordering from them because even with the exchange rate, the prices are much better than you will find in the USA. I recommend a metal palette and whole pan Winsor & Newton watercolors. I am a color snob, and these paints deliver the most vibrant colors. And don't forget, once a pan is finished, you can wash it in the dishwasher and reuse it with watercolors from a tube (if you have them).

A very basic palette (all Winsor & Newton):

Transparent Yellow, Winsor Red, Winsor Violet (Dioxazine), French Ultramarine, Permanent Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Davy's Gray, and Payne's Gray

If you want to start with a bigger palette, add these colors to the first:

Naples Yellow, Winsor Lemon, Winsor Orange, Scarlet Lake (my favorite color), Permanent Rose, Quinacridone Magenta, Indanthrene Blue, Cobalt Turquoise Light (my second favorite color), Winsor Green (Blue Shade), and Green Gold

Once you have mastered the above colors, you might want to add:

New Gamboge, Winsor Yellow Deep, Yellow Ochre, Permanent Carmine, Perylene Green, Ultramarine (Green Shade), Winsor Blue (Green Shade), Light Red, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Neutral Tint, Lamp Black, Chinese White

These are my recommendations, but palettes are very personal, so make sure if there are colors that you love to use, you include them to your palette.

Does your child dream of drawing? Do they have books filled with comic book characters
they would like to bring to life? If so, Graphic Illustration at Red Bow Studio is the class
for them. The instructor, Fran Traina, will focus on the fundamentals of composition, color
and media application in graphic illustration. She will also review the basic principles of
one-, two-, and three-point perspective, a necessity in animation and cartooning.

Fran Traina
Fran Traina is an artist who works in many different mediums, her favorite being
pen & ink and watercolor. She has degrees in both Fine Arts and Graphic Design.
Fran takes a sketchbook wherever she goes, and she loves to draw everything from
everyday objects to lovely foreign cities. Recently she has filled her sketchbook with
a bouquet from her church, her son’s Nerf water gun, her broken vacuum, and her
adorable dog, Einstein, pictured above. Please join Fran as she teaches the many
different aspects of graphic illustration in her debut class at Red Bow Studio.

Thank you to everyone who made the Fall Session such a success! It's been wonderful having a busy studio, with new creations galore. Classes will be finishing up in a couple of weeks and each class will host its own art show. Everyone is welcome to see the work of our students, and fabulous work it is too. A show schedule will be posted in the next week.

The Winter Session will begin January 3rd, which is almost upon us. Children enrolled in classes at the studio will have priority for spots until Friday, December 3rd and then anyone can fill the remaining spots. To reserve your space, please bring in $100 deposit per student. The full amount will be due the first day of the class in January. The schedule has been changed around a bit, but for the most part, it is the same. If you have any questions or special requests, please contact the studio via phone or email.

Accordion Fold Albums!

Create 2 photo albums! In this workshop you will learn how to cover bookboards
with book cloth, and how ribbon placement can change the page count and
binding of an accordion fold album. You will have a variety of bookcloth
colors and and ribbons to chose from. We'll make a large photo album that
can hold 8 4x6 photos (black paper used within), and a mini photo album that
can hold 8 photo-booth sized photos.

Cost: $40 per person
Time: 2 hours (10am-noon)

Stab-bound Journals!

In this workshop you will create an over-size journal (9-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches) that can
be used as a sketch book, and we'll also make a smaller journal (6 x 4
inches). We¹ll be binding both books using the centuries-old Japanese stab
binding technique (it¹s not as violent as it sounds!). Multiple punching
guides and thread will be provided for both journals, allowing you to create
books that are completely you. The over-size journal covers will be
cardstock, which will be available in a variety of colors, and the interior
pages will be white (30 pages total). The smaller journal covers will be
made with handmade paper, made in Minnesota by Cave Paper, and the interior
pages are off-white (25 pages). Additional journal kits will be available
for purchase after the workshop.

Cost: $40 per person

Recently Red Bow Studio hosted a wonderful bookmaking workshop taught by Jen Shaffer. One of our regulars, Fran, attended the workshop and made a fabulous hardbound sketchbook. I was lucky enough to peek inside of her sketchbook today and to my surprise, it was filled with lovely sketches!

I always find that it is very difficult to begin drawing or writing in a brand new sketchbook (or blank book). Where do you begin? How will the drawings ever be as beautiful as the book itself? I have to admit, the book I made is still sitting on the shelf, empty of inspiration.

Fran has blossomed at Red Bow...

I can't get enough of all her writing and painting and am so thankful she let me share all of her super-inspirational art.

In a nutshell...Fran is on fire!

Classes at the studio have been filling up and it's wonderful to watch all of the artwork being generated by our young artistes. The craft hole punches have been a hit with everyone young and old. Who doesn't love a bunch of patterned hearts, stars, and crowns floating around a studio? The young hands have been getting a workout with all of the hole punching being done. One child sat for a good hour punching out a design on one piece of paper, which he turned into a very creative monster. It's wonderful to have all of the positive energy traveling through the studio everyday. Thank you to all who are involved.
If you are far away and not able to visit the studio, you can still craft punch at home. Martha Stewart makes fabulous craft punches that you can find everywhere from Michael's (be sure you get the 40% coupon out of your local circular) or you may get lucky and find them at T.J. At Red Bow I have a class focused on jump-starting inspiration called "Art Journaling". Each week a different project is presented and then each participant executes it in the way they see fit. I try to keep each project fairly mysterious until class time, so that people don't think about what they are going to do before hand- I like to keep the work spontaneous so that it leave more room for experimentation.

Fireflies by Fran

Last Tuesday I asked people to bring an object that means something to them; something they liked. When they arrived at the studio the contents of the collage boxes were strewn about the tables and I asked people to pick out ten pieces of paper about 5"x5" in size. Participants picked out wallpaper scraps, tissue paper, old calendar pages, children's book pages, and many other paper items. Once everyone had their own pile of paper, we began to draw our objects with pens, pencils, charcoal, and other drawing media.

The focus of this project was to practice our drawing skills through repetition and to see how different writing media translates on different types of paper.

Morning Stab-Bound Journal and Album Workshop (10-noon)

In this workshop you will re-use paper to create a journal and a photo album from one of the best! Jen will teach you how to bind both books using the centuries-old Japanese stab binding technique- a beautiful and decorative finish that enhances any hand bound book. In addition, she will teach you how to cover book boards, another invaluable technique for a serious bookbinder.
$25 per person + $5 materials fee

Afternoon Hard-Bound Journal Workshop (2-5pm)
In the second workshop, Jen will teach you how to make a hard-bound journal. You’ll create an over-size book by hand, perfect for writing or visual journaling! Jen will show you how to construct the book block, how to apply paper and book cloth to the cover boards, and how to fit it all together. There will be a variety of book cloth colors and cover papers to chose from (a paper lover's heaven). You'll learn how to make hard bound journal in the workshop, and then you'll be able to take your new skills home to create thousands more!

In this workshop participants will be given their own sketchbook and each Tuesday we will work with a different medium and inspiration to help spark our creativity. Projects will include painting, printmaking, collage, drawing, charcoal, and other processes that might suit our fancy. The focus of this class is to let yourself go and to fill a sketchbook with raw ideas that can be used in the future. This workshop is open to anyone who is willing to pick up a pencil or paintbrush and create. (A sense of humor is always welcome and much appreciated!)
$150 for 8 classes + $20 materials fee

My Journey through Journaling at Red Bow

Just look at what I was able to do my very first class...

One rainy day in April, a friend and I stopped in to Red Bow studio to say hello and ask if we could post something in the window for the Sea Cliff Beach committee. After spending five minutes with Patricia and absorbing the creativity, warmth and beauty of her Red Bow studio and all of her work, I was hooked. I wanted to do more, learn more, explore in more depth the part of me that I had been neglecting for quite some time.

I asked Patricia if she could help me and she told me about the journaling class she was about to start up. Immediately, I signed up. So, for the past several Tuesdays from 7 - 9 pm, I visit with Patricia and several other creative women at Red Bow and we work on projects that we post to our journal.

At first, I was very nervous - could I do what Patricia was asking us to do? Will it turn out poorly? With some gentle instruction, a little lesson in watercolors, brushes and techniques, I created some of the most beautiful images that I have ever created. Patricia suggested how to enhance what I began and was so supportive of me.

Over the course of 5 weeks, I have had the pleasure of creating with Patricia and her other 'students', both very young and older and everyone leaves with a smile on their face, a little peace in their heart and several lovely images in their journal.

For those who desire to tap that maybe-forgotten inner creative genius, I highly recommend the Tuesday night journaling workshop.

Tonight at Red Bow Studio we will be painting rocks and shells with acrylic paint. Please come and join us! $15 per person. We have rocks at the studio, but if you have special ones you'd like to paint, please bring them along.

After they are painted and dried we will coat them with a satin varnish so that they can be used indoors or outdoors and won't get ruined. It's great to put a group of these in a clear vase to hold your flowers. Feel free to bring your own beverages, there will be a small tray of hors d'oeuvres served.

Ladies Nights

Please join us in June for a series of ladies nights. Workshops will begin at 7pm and continue until everyone has finished their project (or wine;). All prices include materials and light hors d’oeuvres. Each workshop is intended to be super casual and fun, and a way to meet other ladies in the community. Wishing Wheels $15

In this workshop we will create wishing wheels, which can also be used to list your goals or any other list of ideas. You can make a wheel for dad listing all the wonderful things you love about him.

Garlands $20

In this workshop we will create party garlands, which can be used to decorate a houseplant or hung in any room to jazz it up. They are a fun way to personalize parties as well.

June 30

Painted Rocks & Shells $15

In this workshop we will use acrylic to paint designs on found rocks and shells. They can be used for decorations, gifts, in a clear vase to hold flowers- the uses are endless. Bring a huge rock to paint and you can use it as a garden decoration or a doorstop!

Mommy/Daddy & Me

We will be offering Mommy/Daddy & Me classes Monday mornings from 10am to 11am (or longer depending on turnout). The fee is $10 per child. The classes will be focused on exploring the tools and materials in the studio, so that your little one can learn about the wonders of creating. We might paint with watercolors, collage with a glue stick, practice making holes with a hole punch, and many other fun activities. The bonus is you can go home to a clean house (depending on how you left it of course!). Drop-ins are welcome. Classes begin June 14th.

Ice Cold Lemonade

Last weekend Red Bow participated in the Sea Cliff Garage Sale Day and our big hit was the homemade ice tea and lemonade sold by our very young entrepreneurs. One customer said,"I don't want lemonade, but here's a dollar because you two are so cute". Thank you to everyone who stopped in!

The Sea Cliff Civic Association is hosting it's 2010 Garage Sale Day and Red Bow Studio will be a participant! The day begins at 9am and finishes around 4pm. (Red Bow will be opened from about 9-1 depending on how busy it is.) Members of the Civic Association will be at Clifton Park distributing Treasure Maps with all the participating locations for the mere sum of $1...a deal that's hard to beat and goes towards a good cause. If it rains on Saturday, no worries, it will be held Sunday June 6th.

Red Bow Studio will be loaded with girls children clothing and toys (that need to go- I almost tripped and broke my neck on one last week!!). There will be some other treasures that you don't want to miss and ice cold lemonade and ice tea. Please stop by, if even just to say hi and check out the studio! Enjoy the beautiful weather.

Thank you for visiting. I am getting the inventory together and just visited the Stationary show last week and found many great young designers and suppliers. Right now most of the inventory consists of my creations, but I will post new and upcoming designers whose work I love. You can take home the bows above, just email or call me. They are oil paintings and range in price all under $100.

Welcome to Red Bow Studio. We are now open Monday-Thursday from 11am-5pm and Friday-Sunday by chance. We offer art classes for children in the afternoon and soon we will offer specialized workshops to adults. This is the studio of Patricia Kaegi Weiss and her artwork is featured as well as the artwork of other local artists. We also offer a selection of goodies such as home accessories and unique items for gifts or to decorate your space. Please stop by if you are in the area!

I am constructing a website, but it takes time and money, so for now I am using blogger- easy and free, a wonderful combination.
